Millions of dispirited South Africans returned to schools and colleges
and offices on Tuesday, numbed over the elimination of their team
from the World Cup in a weather jinx that seems to following the national
team.
President Thabo Mbeki led the nation in expressing disappointment
at the rain-enforced tie with Sri Lanka at Durban late Monday that
ended South Africa's campaign. South Africa needed a win to advance
and one more single would have propelled the hosts into the next round,
likely atop Group B.
Mbeki reminded the nation that the "show goes on" as the last six
teams fight it out for cricket's ultimate prize.
