Rio violence rises during Carnaval

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, Mar 06, 2003 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Killings and other violent crimes during Rio de Janeiro' s world famous Carnaval celebration were up this year despite bolstered security measures, Jornal do Brasil newspaper reported Thursday.

Although 34,000 civilian officers and 3,000 federal troops roamed Rio's streets, statistics show that 90 people were killed during the 4-day festival of music, dance and assorted mischief that leads up to Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season.

Rio Public Safety Secretary Josias Quintal said she would conduct a thorough investigation into the violence.
