An alliance of farmers, environmentalists and academics yesterday protested
against a government policy that would allow field testing of genetically
modified organisms (GMOs) before they have been proven safe.
The groups said it was too risky for local species and human health,
as there is no conclusive scientific proof of the safety of GMO crops.
The testing policy is a tactic by the government to promote GM farming
in Thailand without further discussion or proof, at the behest of
GMO multinational
corporations, they said, adding that GM papaya would likely be the
first
such GM product to be pushed among farmers.
