Dateline: BEIJING Likening an Islamic separatist movement to an annoying rodent, the leader of China's Xinjiang region said Wednesday that strong measures are under way to curb the pro-independence group's activities.

Simayi Tieliwardi said residents of Xinjiang "deeply hate" the group, the East Turkestan Islamic Movement.

"The East Turkestan Islamic Movement is part of international terrorism. It harms national security, the people's interest and unification, " Tieliwardi said at a news conference. "We have been taking strong and determined measures against the group recently, so no big events have happened in a while."
