ASIA: Full story of "Death Railway" yet to be told

KANCHANABURI, Thailand, AAP - Little is still known of the full story of the Thailand-Burma "Death Railway" of World War II, according to its chief researcher, Rod Beattie.

Many official reports about it "lie largely unread in the archives" around the world, he said.

And collecting many survivors' stories was becoming urgent with the passage of time.

During his eight years in Kanchanaburi, Mr Beattie, a Queenslander, has spent long periods locating and searching sections of the railway abandoned after 1947.
