Qld: Boy dies from box jelly fish sting

By Nadine Rofail

BRISBANE, March 23 AAP - A seven-year-old boy died today after being stung by a large box jelly fish in north Queensland, authorities said.

He was stung on the chest and neck at unpatrolled Wongaling Beach, south of Cairns, about 1.15pm (AEST), police said.

The boy's grandfather tried to save him and was stung on the hand during the rescue attempt, a Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said.

She said he was not seriously injured.

Surf Life Saving Australia national medical officer Peter Fenner said it appeared the boy was stung by a chironex fleckeri - one of the deadliest large box jelly fish.
