Analysis: US military presence in Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq

Today, for the first time, the United States announced its military
presence in Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq. Marine Corps Major
General Pete Osmond told journalists in the town of Salaheddin that
some ground troops had arrived to provide largely humanitarian assistance.
He didn't say how many troops, and his appearance came as the US
seemed to be stepping up its operations along what may be developing
into a second front in the war on Iraq. NPR's Ivan Watson reports
from Chamchamal in northern Iraq.
