Dateline: SAN JOSE, Calif. Chipmakers Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Fujitsu Ltd. plan to combine their flash memory businesses into a new company that can better compete against industry leader Intel Corp.

The new company, which will be called FASL LLC, will have assets of $2.5 billion when it starts operations in the third quarter, pending regulatory approval. It will be headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif., where AMD is based, the companies said Monday.

Fujitsu and AMD have worked together on flash memory in a 50-50 joint venture for the past 10 years but have had to compete against each other in some markets.
