Article: Los Angeles may erase notorious 'South Central' from the map

00-00-0000
Dateline: LOS ANGELES South Central Los Angeles is on the verge of fading into history.

The City Council is scheduled to vote Wednesday on whether to formally rename the historically black area in an effort to sever the region from its longtime image as a gang-ridden, poverty-stricken ghetto. It would instead be known as South Los Angeles on future city documents.

"A name change isn't going to make all the problems go away and nobody thinks that," said Councilwoman Jan Perry, one of the supporters. "It's basically one way, albeit a small one, to give a community its identity back."

There is no organized opposition to the suggestion.
