Article: Leipzig wins German nomination for 2012 Olympic Games

Dateline: MUNICH, Germany Leipzig will be Germany's candidate for the 2012 Olympic Games, Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder announced Saturday, after the eastern city defeated four rivals for the national nomination.

The German National Olympic Committee chose Leipzig over favorite Hamburg and three other western cities at a session in Munich. Rostock, also in the former communist east, will host the sailing competition.

Leipzig will compete against perhaps six other cities around the globe for the right to stage the Olympics.

New York and Madrid already have announced their intention to run, while bids from Moscow, Paris, London and either Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo are ...
