Dateline: UNITED NATIONS Syria asked the U.N. Security Council Wednesday to approve an Arab- backed resolution calling for the Middle East to be free of all weapons of mass destruction, but the United States again charged that Syria was trying to develop such weapons.

The move is aimed at Israel, which the Arabs blame for escalating U.S. threats against Syria. Israel is widely believed to possess nuclear weapons though it refuses to confirm or deny having them and is not a party to the global treaties aimed at controlling the spread of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.
