Tomorrow night nine Democrats running for president will appear in
their first debate. It's being held in South Carolina, a state that'
s newly prominent in the 2004 campaign. South Carolina Democrats
have scheduled their primary for the first week in February, just
after Iowa and New Hampshire. They hope that will help the party
nominate a candidate who appeals to Southerners. From Charleston,
NPR's Adam Hochberg reports.
