Dateline: TOKYO Tokyo shares fell nearly 1 percent Thursday, as the yen's surge against the U.S. dollar prompted investors to sell key exporter issues, ending a five-day rally.

The Nikkei Stock Average of 225 selected issues lost 78.22 points, or 0.96 percent, to 8,031.55 points. The index gained 26.21 points, or 0.32 percent, on Wednesday.

The dollar bought 116.34 yen at 5 p.m. (0800 GMT), down 1.32 yen from late Wednesday in Tokyo and below its level of 116.40 yen in late New York trading overnight. It stayed between 116.22 yen and 116.74 yen in Tokyo trading on Thursday.
