Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged the world to lift
a decades-old embargo on Turkish Cypriots, while the Turkish Cypriot
leadership announced Friday a new set of confidence-building measures
on the war-divided island.
Erdogan's first official visit to the island comes amid increasing
pressure to work for the reunification of Cyprus.
Cyprus has been split into a Greek Cypriot-controlled south and a
Turkish-held north since Turkey invaded in 1974 after a short-lived
coup by supporters of union with Greece.
Many Cypriots were hoping Erdogan would use his one-day visit to exert
pressure on Turkish Cypriot leader ...
