Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged the world to lift
a decades-old embargo on Turkish Cypriots, while the Turkish Cypriot
leadership announced Friday a new set of confidence-building measures
on the war-divided island.
Erdogan's first visit to the island as premier comes amid increasing
pressure to work for the reunification of Cyprus, divided since 1974
between a Greek Cypriot south and a Turkish Cypriot north.
Many Cypriots were hoping that he would use his one-day visit to exert
pressure on Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to return to the
negotiating table with Greek Cypriots.
