Monday, May 12, 2003 -- Scientists have been scratching their heads for years about seven billion tons of carbon dioxide missing each year from the atmosphere. Industry releases about 22 billion tons of this "greenhouse gas" - implicated in global warming - into the atmosphere annually. Measuring the rise of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and factoring in the amount that could be soaked up by the oceans, they believe that about half of the expected amount is unaccounted for.
