Qld: Dolphins used as bait by illegal fishing boats
By Ainsley Pavey
BRISBANE, May 18 AAP - The Queensland government is cracking down
on illegal foreign
fishing boats especially those using dolphins and dugongs as bait.
Queensland Primary Industries Minister Henry Palaszczuk said today
that the mammals
were being used as bait by Indonesian operators who were the main
raiders of state fish
stocks.
Mr Palaszczuk said fishing authorities were on track for a record
capture of illegal
boats this year, with 53 foreign vessels caught in 2003, including
19 boats in four days
last week.
The government says about one illegal operator is netted every
two days.
