Qld: Dolphins used as bait by illegal fishing boats

BRISBANE, May 18 AAP - The Queensland government is cracking down on illegal foreign fishing boats especially those using dolphins and dugongs as bait.

Queensland Primary Industries Minister Henry Palaszczuk said today that the mammals were being used as bait by Indonesian operators who were the main raiders of state fish stocks.

Mr Palaszczuk said fishing authorities were on track for a record capture of illegal boats this year, with 53 foreign vessels caught in 2003, including 19 boats in four days last week.

The government says about one illegal operator is netted every two days.
