Hours before turning 40, David Wells beat the Boston Red Sox to put
the New York Yankees in first place.
That gave him two reasons to celebrate.
"You think he's going to have a birthday party?" Red Sox outfielder
Johnny Damon said after New York's 7-3 victory Monday night. "You
think he's hitting the town tonight? I'd like to be around for that."
Wells (6-1) bounced back from his only loss of the season by scattering
nine hits and a walk over 6 2-3 innings, allowing one run and striking
out four. The Yankees regained sole possession of first place in the
