Dateline: BRUSSELS, Belgium Parma ham producers won a major victory Tuesday when the European Union's highest court ruled that the prepackaged prosciutto had to be sliced in the home region to be worthy of the name.

The Court of Justice also agreed with an Italian law that prepackaged Grana Padano cheese had to be grated in the Po valley region of production to preserve its "quality and authenticity."

The court's ruling brought closure to a case that started in 1997, when Parma producers sued Asda, a Wal-Mart owned British supermarket chain, for selling "Parma"-labeled ham that was prepackaged and pre- sliced in England.
