The head of Austria's Jewish Community rejected the government's plan
Tuesday to grant three annual interest-free loans to overcome a widening
budget gap.
The Jewish Community has long faced financial difficulties and has
been seeking government aid for funding religious, social and educational
activities as well as for infrastructure and personnel.
After the Jewish Community announced last month it would have to lay
off 35 employees _ a third of its staff _ and other drastic cost-cutting
moves, the government said it would set aside an annual euro772,000
(US$906,000) in loans for three years. The community already receives
