The United States on Tuesday launched the construction of new diplomatic
compounds in the capitals of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan _ a move underlining
its increased interest in Central Asia.
At a groundbreaking ceremony for a new embassy in Tashkent, U.S. Ambassador
to Uzbekistan John Herbst said the construction represented growing
relations between the two countries.
At a similar ceremony in the Tajik capital Dushanbe, U.S. Ambassador
Franklin Huddle said the project to build a new diplomatic compound
marked "a new stage of Tajik-American friendship."
