LONDON, June 18 AFP - Any doubts the directors of Real Madrid harboured about signing David Beckham will have disappeared within minutes of their new signing touching down in Japan today.

The sight of hundreds of frenzied Japanese fans turning up to greet their hero provided a reassuring reminder of exactly why Real have splashed out STG25 million ($A62.6 million) on the England captain.

In playing terms, Beckham may have become surplus to requirements at Manchester United but his status as a global icon makes him unrivalled as a marketing asset.
