Attackers shot and wounded seven British troops in southern Iraq on
Tuesday, and a firefight elsewhere left three Iraqis dead and an American
soldier wounded, the latest casualties from 25 attacks on U.S.-led
forces in 24 hours.
The shooting in the town of Amarah was the first significant attack
on British troops since major combat was declared over on May 1. While
Americans have been under fire in central Iraq for weeks, the British
in the south have felt secure enough to patrol Iraq's second-biggest
city, Basra, without flak jackets or helmets.
