Last week, violence focused national attention on an American tale of two cities. In western Michigan, on one side of the St. Joseph River sits the aptly named town of St. Joseph. Its population is 90 percent white, the unemployment rate holds steady at about 2 percent, and the waterfront is lined with upscale restaurants and boutiques.
