Dateline: NAJAF, Iraq American troops moved in force to arrest the U.S.-appointed mayor of this southern Iraqi town, removing him on kidnapping and corruption charges and detaining 62 of his aides _ a step likely to please Najaf' s Shiite residents.

The arrest Monday came on the second day of a U.S.-led sweep across central Iraq aimed at capturing Saddam Hussein loyalists and curbing a wave of attacks on U.S. and British soldiers.
