Turkey and the United States struggled Sunday to resolve a diplomatic
crisis over the detention of 11 Turkish special forces in Iraq by
the U.S. military, a standoff that strained efforts by the NATO allies
to repair relations frayed over the Iraq war.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other top officials discussed
the dispute with Vice President Dick Cheney for about a half hour
Sunday, Turkish officials said. The conversations appeared to be aimed
at making sure relations didn't deteriorate further.
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said afterward that he believed the
dispute could be resolved by late Sunday.
