Article: Spanish prime minister warns of terror threats but hails U.S.-European relations

Dateline: SACRAMENTO Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar told California lawmakers Thursday that terrorism is the greatest threat to international stability and promised to continue his country's role in the war against terror.

"We Spaniards who have suffered so much from terrorism feel the brutal attacks of September 11 as an attack on ourselves," Aznar said before a joint session of the California Legislature. "Terrorism knows no borders, its sole objective is to destroy our liberties."

The Basque group ETA has claimed responsibility for more than 800 killings during a 35-year campaign for independence of the Basque region of northern Spain.
