Feature: Breast cancer protects the heart?

WASHINGTON, Jul 11, 2003 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Scientists may have found a slim silver lining in the dark cloud of breast cancer because new research suggests women who have survived the disease show a significantly reduced risk of suffering a heart attack, the number one killer of women in America.

Researchers led by Dr. Elizabeth Lamont, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, looked at data from the National Cancer Institute's "Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results" study. For five years, they observed 5,980 women ages 67 and older who had survived a ...
