Katie Couric's big effect on colonoscopies

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Jul 17, 2003 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The live, March 2000 broadcast on NBC's "Today Show" of Katie Couric's colonoscopy has boosted the rate at which Americans are getting their colons checked, researchers report.

The researchers found colonoscopy rates nationwide jumped more than 20 percent immediately following the broadcast and remained at that level for at least nine months afterward.

They have dubbed the phenomenon the "Katie Couric Effect."

Couric's husband, Jay Monahan, died from colon cancer at age 42, leaving her a widow and single mother of two small children. ...
