Dateline: BARCELONA, Spain A dive he learned just four months ago earned Canada's Alexandre Despatie a gold medal in 10-meter platform diving at the World Swimming Championship on Saturday.

Despatie scored a stunning 107.16 points for a spectacular backward 2 1/2 somersault with a 2 1/2 twist from the pike position in his last dive of the final for a total score of 716.91 points against 697.74 for silver medalist Mathew Helm of Australia.

"It's a dive I learned some months ago and fortunately it's turned out well," said Despatie, who was fourth in the 2000 Sydney Olympics in this event and a silver medalist at the 2001 world championships.
