China's state-backed Catholic Church today defied the pope by ordaining five new bishops. The move is seen as a slap in the face for the Vatican. The ceremony took place just hours before Pope John Paul ordained 12 new bishops at St. Peter's Church in Rome. The Chinese ceremony at a Beijing cathedral followed Roman Catholic practice, but the bishops were chosen by the Patriotic Catholic Association, loyal to China's atheist Communist Party. ...
