Dateline: PITTSBURGH
Despite missing Thursday's deadline, the San Diego Padres are still
actively pursuing Pittsburgh outfielder Brian Giles and would like
to finalize a deal within the next two weeks.
Giles, who grew up in San Diego, would provide a lift to the last-
place Padres' offense and give them a high-profile hometown player
to market as they move into PETCO Park next season.
Padres general manager Kevin Towers talked with Pirates GM Dave Littlefield
throughout the teams' three-game series this week, but they couldn'
t reach an agreement by Thursday's 4 p.m. deadline for trading without
waivers.
