Jake Peavy allowed two hits over seven shutout innings, and Phil Nevin
homered and drove in four runs as the San Diego Padres defeated the
Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.
The NL wild card-leading Phillies had their four-game winning streak
stopped. It was the first scheduled doubleheader at Veterans Stadium
since Aug. 10, 1985, against St. Louis. The Phillies are moving into
a new ballpark next season.
Nevin went 2-for-4 and has hit safely in seven of nine games since
coming off the disabled list July 23. He had been sidelined since
March 7 after surgery on his left shoulder.
