Jill Abramson, the Washington bureau chief of The New York Times, and
John Geddes, the newspaper's deputy managing editor, have been appointed
managing editors of The Times. The appointments were announced Thursday
by Bill Keller, the executive editor, and are effective Sept. 2.Abramson,
49, will be managing editor for news gathering, serving as Keller'
s deputy on matters related to the assembly of the daily news report
as well as on longer-range news planning. Geddes, 51, will be managing
editor for news operations, with responsibility for matters including
