Fed: Downer defends intelligence agencies

CANBERRA, Aug 3 AAP - Attacks on intelligence agencies were incoherent and critics failed to give credit for the agencies' achievements in the war on terror, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said today.

Mr Downer said the US had made a mistake in identifying Australia as a possible venue for September-11 style terrorist attack rather than as a possible jump-off point.

"Fair enough. They did make a mistake," he said on the Ten Network.
