Lawyers for an antiques dealer and his investment partner told a federal
judge that he should deny North Carolina's request for an original
copy of the Bill of Rights the state claims as its own.
Officials in North Carolina contend the document belongs to the state
and was stolen from its Capitol in 1865 by an Ohio soldier.
It was recovered in March by FBI agents, and North Carolina attorneys
have asked a federal court to order it returned. The judge did not
rule Monday.
Lawyers for antiques dealer Wayne Pratt and collector Robert Matthews
questioned whether the government's seizure of the document was proper.
