Dateline: LUSAKA, Zambia President Levy Mwanawasa survived an attack on his presidency Wednesday when lawmakers voted overwhelmingly not to impeach the southern African leader.

The vote brings to an end two days of intense debate over a motion to impeach the president and threats from his own ruling party members to back the opposition.

Mwanawasa has angered many senior officials in his own party with his corruption-busting drive, and he has infuriated opposition parties by poaching some of their top leaders.

But after 159 lawmakers cast their ballots, Mwanawasa's leadership was still in tact with only 57 votes against him, 49 short of the required two thirds.
