Pedro Valdes belted a three-run homer in the fifth inning Monday to
lift the Pacific League-leading Daiei Hawks to a 9-4 victory over
the Orix BlueWave at Fukuoka Dome.
With the victory, Daiei now enjoys a 5.5-game lead over second-place
Seibu Lions in the league standings while reducing its magic number
to clinch the pennant to 29.
Valdes, formerly of the Texas Rangers, blasted his 18th homer of the
season off Orix starter Hidetaka Kawagoe. Earlier, infielder Nobuhiko
Matsunaka nailed his 20th home run of the season in the third inning
