Attorney General John Ashcroft began a nationwide campaign Tuesday
to defend the USA Patriot Act, saying the anti-terrorism law is the
chief reason America has not suffered another catastrophic terrorist
attack since Sept. 11.
Quoting Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill, Ashcroft compared the
law passed six weeks after the 2001 attacks to turning points in history
such as the Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg and U.S. aid to Great
Britain in the early days of the struggle against Nazi Germany.
"We have used these tools to prevent terrorists from unleashing more
