The United States and the United Nations denounced the escalation
of violence in the Middle East Thursday, calling on all sides to keep
the internationally backed "road map" peace plan on track.
"At the end of the road map is a cliff that both sides will fall off
of," U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell warned Israelis and Palestinians.
"I believe both parties understand that a way has to be found to go
forward," he told reporters after meeting with U.N. Secretary-General
Kofi Annan at U.N. headquarters.
