SA: Contaminated sites to be targeted by clean-up group

ADELAIDE, Aug 28 AAP - About 80,000 Australian sites contaminated by toxic or radioactive substances will be targeted by a new national clean-up group to be launched tomorrow.

The Centre for Environmental Risk Assessment and Remediation (CERAR) has been jointly set up in Adelaide by federal and state governments, industry and the University of South Australia.

Centre Director Ravi Naidu said there were about 30,000 contaminated sites in each of NSW and Queensland, 10,000 in Victoria, about 4,000 each in Western Australia and SA, 1,000 in the Northern Territory and about 500 each in Tasmania and the ACT.
