SA: Contaminated sites to be targeted by clean-up group
ADELAIDE, Aug 28 AAP - About 80,000 Australian sites contaminated
by toxic or radioactive
substances will be targeted by a new national clean-up group to be
launched tomorrow.
The Centre for Environmental Risk Assessment and Remediation (CERAR)
has been jointly
set up in Adelaide by federal and state governments, industry and
the University of South
Australia.
Centre Director Ravi Naidu said there were about 30,000 contaminated
sites in each
of NSW and Queensland, 10,000 in Victoria, about 4,000 each in Western
Australia and SA,
1,000 in the Northern Territory and about 500 each in Tasmania and
the ACT.
