Dateline: NAPLES, Fla.
Ave Maria University, the nation's first new Roman Catholic university
in four decades, opened Tuesday with a Mass attended by the 101 students
at its temporary campus.
The university was established by Domino's Pizza founder Thomas S.
Monaghan, who has devoted himself to Roman Catholic causes since he
sold the pizza chain in 1998.
"It's an extraordinarily exciting day because it's a culmination of
a yearlong effort," university President Nicholas J. Healy said. "
It's a very satisfying achievement."
Classes will be held in a development in North Naples until the school'
s $220-million permanent campus is completed in the fall ...
