Atlanta Life Insurance Company Responds To Commissioner's Directive On
Race-Based Premiums

In response to the July 17, 2000 release of a Directive by the Georgia
Insurance Commissioner instructing a list of companies to cease collecting
any premium which is based upon the race of the policyholder, Atlanta Life
Insurance Company takes issue with its inclusion on the list.

On behalf on the company, president and CEO Charles H. Cornelius stated,
"The directive does not apply to Atlanta Life Insurance Company, and our
presence on this list was clearly a mistake. Unlike majority-owned
companies, Atlanta Life Insurance Company has always had only one rate book
