Canoe race will send Native youth to Japan

Masau Yamamoto wants to save the world, and he wants the Ojibwe people of
Minnesota to help him. The Japanese environmentalist and entrepreneur
arrived at the Leech Lake Reservation August 2 surfing a swell of interest
by Japanese consumers in traditional Native American foods. Yamamoto had
made purchases of wild rice and maple syrup from Leech Lake harvesters
during a 2001 visit to the reservation, and he was back for more.

But business wasn't his only motive for returning. Yamamoto's arrival at
Indian leader Dennis Banks' home on the shores of Leech Lake also resulted
from promises he had made to Minnesota's Native youth following the Sept.
11 attacks.
