Ms. Althea Gibson Is Honored
When Wheaties unveiled a special-edition of its recent Black History Month
package, it commemorated the career, and accomplishments of tennis pioneer
Ms. Althea Gibson. The unveiling took place at the Althea Gibson Early
Childhood Academy in East Orange. In 1950, Ms. Gibson became the first
African-American to break tennis' color barrier and went on to win five
Grand Slam titles, including the 1957 and 1958 Wimbledon and U.S. Open
championships.
"This is quite an honor for me," Ms. Gibson said from her home in New
