URIBIA, Colombia, Sep. 2 (IPS/GIN) -- Esmeredith is one of 60
women from the Wayúu indigenous community, a matrilineal culture
in northern Colombia, who have signed up for a family planning
programme that includes free sterilization.
"The question of children is our business. Our husbands have no
say in this," the 33-year-old mother of eight told IPS.
The family planning programme is offered by the city government
of Uribia, in the northernmost Colombian department of La Guajira.
The initiative evolved out of a nutrition plan targeting the
Wayúu communities, where a high prevalence of tuberculosis has been
