ONE wonders how Labor Day came about. It is being celebrated throughout the
country including Puerto Rico and Canada every first Monday of September.

In 1882, Peter J. McGuire, founder of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters
suggested a national holiday to honor the country's working people.

In September 1882, workers staged the first Labor Day parade in New York
City. Organized labor then campaigned to make the day a national holiday.

In 1887, Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a legal holiday, and
it was President Grover Cleveland who signed a bill in 1894 making Labor
