CLEVELAND CLIPS: Fourth of July; what it means
HAPPY birthday America. Fourth of July is Independence Day - the
anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the
Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.
The Philippines used to celebrate the same date because we got our
independence from the United States on July 4, 1946. However, we celebrate
it now on June 12, the date when Emilio Aguinaldo, then president of the
Philippine revolutionary government during the Spanish era, proclaimed the
independence of the Philippines at Cavite el Viejo (Kawit).
