POTPOURRI: Noninvasive imaging detects narrowing of carotid arteries

THE introduction of a new noninvasive imaging technique to detect narrowing
or blockage of the carotid arteries in the neck is a major breakthrough for
those at high risk for stroke.

When the blood supply to the brain is compromised by narrowing or occlusion
of the carotid arteries in the neck or due to a clot lodged in the brain, a
stroke occurs. Brain tissue which is deprived of blood begins to die within
4 minutes. Thus, time is of the essence in making a prompt diagnosis and
