Article: POTPOURRI: Peanut allergy cases rising

AN article which appeared in the April 25, 2002 issue of the New England
Journal of Medicine (NEJM) reported a significant rise in the number of
individuals who suffer from allergy to peanuts, tree nuts (e.g., almonds,
walnuts and cashews), or both, by 50 percent over the past 20 years.

This figure is alarming, when one considers that these allergies account
for most fatal or near-fatal allergic reactions in this country.

According to the article, about three million Americans (approximately 1.1
percent of the U.S. population) are affected by such allergies.

Although the exact reasons for the increased incidence of peanut allergy
largely remain a mystery, ...
